The Gosford Open

Before our adults meeting we have some juniors come for some coaching and play
good to see Lachlan (facing us)from a few years back passing the chess-baton to his young ones young Paul and Max take it seriously
We had our (Gosford's) Annual General Meeting - lots of new faces and a lot was accomplished in under an hour. After that fidemaster John Curtis gave a Simul - the score was the 'usual' 14-0

The week after we played the Gosford Blitz Championship 2007

Placings 1st and 2nd with one best performer award. Allen easily outperformed his rating but since he already came second...

Zach entered the tournament under a time restriction and if I had started the darn-well thing on time... in round 6 though theere was the exciting encounter between the two top seeds. Allen has shown good form from the District Championship (where he scored equal second) on - how I remember when fast chess was a weak spot, it may still be relatively speaking, but he was still good enough to only drop games to Zach and Stephen.

I, meantime had my little tussle with Michael, was in deepening trouble but fortune smiled on me and I came up with a bit of a swindle, a sort-of reconstruction follows later.

different indeed, a friend calls this the 'bowl' defense since black's pawns look like a bowl or perhaps a helmet7.Be3 Nh6 8.Qd2 Ng4 9.Bf4 I felt the knight had lost Tempo but I regretted my Queen developed to d2, and B-f4 felt odd and clunky 9...Bh6 10.h3 Bxf4 11.Qxf4 really this is as far as I'll note here - as you'll see my opponent plays via this schema as black - perhaps not exclusively but it turns out the three blacks went this way. 11...Nh6 12.Ng5 e6 13.e5 0-0 14.Nce4 Bxe4 15.Nxe4 Nf5 16.Nf6+ Kg7 17.Bxh5 Nh6 18.Be2 Nc6 19.Bd3 Ne7 20.g4 Nd5 I was liking my position a lot - the very nice Knight outpost had a real cramp going 21.Qg5 Nb4 22.Be4 d5 23.Bxg6? fxg6 24.Nh5+ Kh7 25.Nf6+ Rxf6 26.exf6 Nxc2 27.Rad1 Qf8 28.f4 Ne3 29.f5! having a point under my belt (and showing off - a friend was watching), I felt emboldened to lash out into the unknown and take ALL the pawns around the King 11...Bxh3 12.gxh3 Qxh3 13.Qe2 Qg4+ [ 13...Nh5 perhaps heading for g3 or f4 would have been aggressive, though I thogh I needed my Rooks and other Knight] 14.Qg2 Qh5 15.Be2 Qh6 urk 16.Kf2 Rfe8 17.Ke1 headed for Queenside castling-by-hand perhaps 17...Qe3 [ 17...Nxe4 18.Nxe4 Rxe4 19.c3 Rae8 better] 18.Rg1 g6 19.Qg5 Qxg5 20.Nxg5 h6 21.Nf3 Nxe4 22.Nxe4 Rxe4 23.Kd2 Rae8 24.Bd3 Re3?! I know I'm biased, but I dod indeed like the final position 1.e4 b6 2.d4 Bb7 3.Nc3 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Be3 h5 6.Bd3 Nh6 7.Qd2 Ng4 8.Bf4 Bh6 9.h3 Bxf4 10.Qxf4 Diagram

a familiar position ?10...Nh6 I sensed that things could go wrong for black REALLY quickly 11.g4 [ 11.Kd2; 11.d5 Na6] 11...hxg4 12.hxg4 f5 13.Rxh6 Rf8 14.Qg5 d6 and thus starts a bit of a King-hunt 15.Qxg6+ Kd7 16.gxf5 c5 17.Qe6+ Kc7 18.Nb5+ Kc6 19.d5# 1-0

this isn't the position - except for the 'essentials' 1.Ba6 Rcd8 2.c4 Rhe8 3.Rb3+ Ka8 4.Bb7+ Kb8 5.Ba6+ whateer the position looks like here, I wasn't doing well at all, possibly losing but my mem ory fails me :-) , but I was certainly glad of the swindle [ but of course, in 'this' position 5.Bxc6+ is preferable - though the position is not correct, remember 5...Kc8 6.Bb7+ Kb8] 5...Ka8 6.Bb7+ Kb8 and after a few more dance steps The end-result being that Michael and I shared the Best performance award, except for Allen who came 2nd overall but rule is once you have a prize ... 1/2-1/2
