1.d4 c5 2.dxc5 Qa5+ 3.Nc3 Qxc5 Black doesn't need to recapture immediately. Instead Black can play; 3...Nf6 4. Nf3,Nc6 5.Nd2,Qxc5 (K.Smith 2395 - W.Browne 2530, San Antonio IT) and Black has achieved equality. 4.Be3! This awkward looking move gains an important tempo, claims the initiative and hints at White's plan, 5.Rb1, 6.Nf3, 7.g3 and finally 8.Bg3 with alot of pressure on the Queenside due to the exposed Black Queen. 4...Qb4 5.Rb1 Nf6 6.a3 Also to gain tempo. 6...Qa5 7.Nf3 Nc6 8.g3 e5 9.Bg2 d5 Sensing the potential danger on the long diagonal, Black attempts to create a "dam" to block the bishop. White doesn't hesitate on exploiting his advantage in development and increases the pressure on the Queenside. 10.b4 Qxa3? Diagram

Black underestimates White's activity, not even sensing the continuation to follow. Better was 10...Qd8 11.Rb3! Qa6 12.b5 Qa5 13.bxc6 bxc6 14.Nxe5! White refuses to let up the pressure and proceeds to dismantle Black's pawn centre, clearing the way for the two bishops on e3 and g2. 14...c5 15.Qd2 Qa1+ Diagram

Black cracks under the pressure and egages in an illusory attack which is refuted instantly. 16.Rb1 Qa3 17.Nxd5 Winning the exchange. White activates the Bishop on g2 with devastating effect. 17...Bd6 (guarding the c7 square from mate in 2) loses to a forced mate in 7 after 18.Nxf6+,gxf6 19.Qxd6,Qa5+ 20.Kd1,Qd2+ 21.Kxd2,Be6 22.Bc6+,Bd7 23.Qxd7+,Kf8 24.Qxf7# 17...Qa2?? 18.Nc7+ resigns Black cannot avoid mate after 18...Ke7 19. [notes by Gary, and where noted - Keith Farrel]

notes by Gary - except those marked 'kf' being Keith Farrell's 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Alan always plays King's Gambit: here I delibrately take the gambit, which Alan was not expecting 2...exf4 3.Nf3 d6 the knight was expected. d6 is played to prevent Ne5, but now I need to defend pawn at f4 4.Bc4 Be6 the idea is to stop the attack on f7 5.Bxe6 fxe6 not what I expected, but at least I can move e6 to e5 next turn 6.d4 Nc6 d4 wrecked my chance to move pawn to e5. Instead I gamble with my knight. During this time, I am very vunerable on kings side 7.Bxf4 Be7 lost the pawn. maybe in hindsight, I should have moved g5 instead of Nc6 8.0-0 g5? missing an x-ray tactic - kf 9.Nxg5 Bxg5 Diagram

10.Qh5+ Kd7 at this point, I thought I had lost the game 11.Bxg5 Nge7 12.Rf7 h6 I was waiting for this rook move. The pawn was offered as a sacrifice, hoping to prevent his queen from moving 13.Bxe7 [13.Bf6] 13...Nxe7 14.Nc3 Qg8 I was expecting the knight move to free up his other rook. My queen move was to enable my other rook to join the fight 15.Qb5+ Kd8 I was expecting this, but felt it was the worst of two evils with Ra f1 threatened. The Kd8 was done instead of Kc8, to protect my knight, and keep pressure on his rook 16.Qxb7?! [16.Raf1 being preferable - kf] 16...Qxf7 17.Qxa8+ I decided to go for the rook swap, but I wonder if it was better not to 17...Nc8 18.Rf1 now I fear his knight moving to b5, and his queen to either b7 or c6, which means I need my queen to guard c7 18...Qg7 19.Nb5 time for a double attack: d4+ [the threat protects against his knight taking a7] or g2++ [with support from rook to come 19...Rg8 20.g3 it's getting serious near c7, but I thought I would give Alan something else to think about. Alan won't do Nxa7, as I will go Qxd4+ pinning his knight. 20...h5 quite lame, but I thought an attack on his pawn would be fun. I can't afford to move my queen as it protects two strands of attack 21.Nxa7?? Diagram

I thought this was a mistake [21.c3 as the knight is needed to support the d-pawn] 21...Qxd4+ 22.Kg2 at this stage, I have to either keep Alan in check, or lose my rook with his QxN+, Ke7 followed by QxR 22...Qxa7 23.Qxa7 Nxa7 now I'm in the ascendancy, if I can hold it together 24.Rf6 Kd7 25.Rh6 Rg4 pawn for a pawn 26.Rxh5 Rxe4 27.Rh7+ Kc6 28.h4 at this stage, I do not want to do a rook swap, as he is two pawns up, against my knight; I probably would be the loser on the deal 28...Re2+ 29.Kf3 Rxc2 30.h5 Rxb2 31.Re7 Kd5 I should have moved pawn to e5, or even Rxh2 32.h6 Nc6 33.h7 Rh2 34.Rxc7 Ne5+ 35.Kf4 Ng6+ 36.Ke3 [36.Kg5 Nf8 37.Rf7 Nxh7+ 38.Kg6 e5 39.a4 Kc5 40.g4 e4 41.g5 e3 42.Re7] 36...Nf8 37.a4 Rxh7 my king has time to intercept the a-pawn 38.Rxh7 Nxh7 39.Kf4 e5+ 40.Kf5 e4 41.a5 Nf8 the knight has time to move across and take 42.a6 Nd7 43.a7 Nb6 44.Kf4 Kd4 the race with the pawn 45.g4 e3 46.Kf3 Kd3 47.g5 e2 white resigns 0-1
