Eddie Mari missed the first two rounds and very nearly lost in his firstround (and was lucky in getting a stalemate in the middle [!!] of the board - rather he was stalemated) against Thelma Clarke - proving that Thelma, despite her lowish rating, can be a dangerous opponent.

So it was of great interest who would rise to the occasion and after a round three victory over Laurie Wallington and round four win against Duncan Bassett it seemed as if Mal Murrell was assured of scoring a clear win - but in the sixth round Eddie put a stop to that. In the final round Laurie (who hadn't faced Eddie through the vagaries of Swiss) still had a tough competitor in Kevin Jones, after a strong game Laurie emerged victorious to share 1st place with Mal.
