after a few (according to computer engines) tussles and minor exchanges of fortune we came to the following position - both Engines (Fritz 8 and Junior 8) were quite insistent that either of us should charge the centre with e4 or ...e5, finally I chanced my arm but unfortunately for Neil he stumbled in reply.

time limit was all moves in 90 minutes 1.d4 d5 2.e3 Nf6 3.Nf3 e6 4.Bd3 Be7 5.0-0 0-0 6.c3 Bd7 7.Qc2 c5 8.Ng5!? h6 9.Nh7 Re8?! [ 9...Nxh7 10.Bxh7+ Kh8 better positionally, and tempo-wise - Fritz says pretty even while Junior gives black almost half a pawn] 10.Nd2 c4?! a move preferred by Junior - though Fritz definitely does not like it [ Fritz 8 prefers 10...Ne4 as does Junior once shown it 11.Nxe4 c4!] 11.Nxf6+ Bxf6 12.Be2 Nc6 13.b3 b5 14.bxc4 bxc4 15.Rb1 e5! chess engines had for a few moves wanted either side to push their e-pawn with advantage 16.e4?? exd4 17.Bf3 dxc3 18.exd5 Nd4 19.Qd1 Neil thought about 4 minutes over this move - as will be seen in the next note we were using about the same amount of time - around a minute per move (on average) [ 19.Qxc3 Ne2+ 20.Bxe2 Bxc3 21.Bxc4 computers conclude this being preferable (they would wouldn't they eh] 19...cxd2 times - White 1 hr 9 mins left, so 21 minutes used, Black - 1 hr 13 [ 19...c2 would have been much stronger] 20.Bxd2 Rb8 time - B - 1.11 left 21.Be3 Rxb1 22.Qxb1 Nxf3+ 23.gxf3 Bh3 24.Rd1 Bh4 W - 1.09 B - 1.09 25.Rd4 Rxe3 26.Qf5?? just a goof after 54 minutes of a tough little game times W - 57 mins left, B - 1.09 (1 hr 9 mins) 26...Re1# 0-1
